How to Fit an Electric Fireplace Insert

How to Fit an Electric Fireplace Insert

Measure the opening before you shop

An electric insert drops into the cavity of an existing wood-burning or gas fireplace and reuses the surround and mantel already in the room. Before comparing models, take three measurements:

  • Width: the narrowest point across the opening, since openings are rarely square
  • Height: the shortest point from the floor of the opening to its top
  • Depth: how far back the cavity runs to the rear wall

Compare those numbers against the H x W x D dimensions on each product page below. One model publishes a minimum opening: the Sierra Flame INS-FM manual calls for at least 31 3/8 x 19 7/8 in for the 30 in and 35 1/8 x 24 in for the 34 in. Have a qualified installer, and a licensed electrician where required, verify the current manual, rough opening, clearances, electrical supply, permits and local code before you buy or build. Hogarazo does not perform installation, electrical work or code review.

Amantii Fire & Ice Classic Edition insert

A traditional insert for a framed built-in opening. Fixed black trim, a grey brick interior with natural soot markings, a size-specific log set over an LED-lit ember bed and tempered front glass are included. The flames use Ultra Flame Technology LEDs with adjustable color, three flame speeds and five brightness levels, and run with or without heat. The heater is an infrared quartz-tube unit with a fan, 1,500 W high and 750 W low, on a standard 120 V outlet. Indoor use only, with combustibles at least 3 ft away. Actual H x W x D dimensions run 21.0396 x 24.7826 x 8.1952 in (26) to 26.989 x 35.1054 x 9.4166 in (33). Full specs by size are on the Fire & Ice Classic Edition insert page.

Amantii Fire & Ice RusticStone

The RusticStone slides into most existing zero-clearance wood-burning fireplace openings, or builds in with only 10 to 12 in of depth. It ships with a pre-installed premium oak log set, a crystal ember bed and a mirrored back panel, plus yellow and orange low-energy LED flames with adjustable speed and brightness. Wi-Fi app control, a remote and a programmable thermostat with multiple heat settings are included, and the flame operates without heat. It runs on a standard 120 V outlet, or an electrician can hardwire it to 240 V for more heat. Optional three-sided or four-sided trim kits and surround sets are sold separately, and it is indoor use only. Actual H x W x D dimensions run 18.6756 x 29.2742 x 9.259 in (30) to 26.3586 x 39.7546 x 9.259 in (42), the same depth across all three sizes. Sizes and pricing are on the RusticStone product page.

Amantii Traditional Bespoke insert

This is the widest size range of the four, from 30 in to 48 in. It is a classic built-in design with concealed upper heat vents, Wi-Fi app control, Bluetooth speakers with fire-crackle sound, a thermostatic remote, adjustable flame speed and brightness, and a programmable timer. The flame operates with or without heat. It is the only insert of the four rated for indoor or outdoor installation, when installed under the current model-specific manual and outdoor guide. Glass media, a grate and a multi-function remote are included; premium media kits and trim pieces are optional. Actual H x W x D dimensions run 19.125 x 29.375 x 11.375 in (30) to 42 x 49.5 x 14.375 in (48). Details for every size are on the Traditional Bespoke insert page.

Sierra Flame INS-FM insert

A flush-mount insert built by Amantii that gives an existing wood-burning or masonry fireplace new life as an alternative to a wood or gas insert, and also suits renovations and new construction. A black steel surround and black overlay are included, heat vents upward through the overlay with no visible grills, and it sits on four leveling legs. The flame is a gradient of yellow, orange and red with four-stage front lighting, four-stage internal back-lighting and 13-color ambient canopy lighting over the media tray. The heater is 1,500 W high and 750 W low on a standard 120 V, 15 A circuit, the flame runs with or without heat, and the unit is hard-wire ready with the plug on the left side. A log set, sable glass media and a remote are included. Indoor built-in use calls for 1 in of clearance at the sides and back, 3/8 in at the top. Firebox H x W x D per the spec sheets is 19 x 29 3/8 x 8 1/2 in (30) and 23 1/8 x 33 1/8 x 8 1/2 in (34); overall with the surround, 25 x 38 x 10 in and 30 x 42 x 10 1/8 in. Full details are on the INS-FM insert page.

What plug-in means

These fireplaces plug into a standard 120 V outlet, with no chimney, gas line or venting to build. The Fire & Ice Classic Edition ships with a 6 ft rear-exit grounded cord for a dedicated outlet, with no extension cords or power strips, and an electrician can hardwire it at 120 V per the manual. On the RusticStone, an electrician can optionally hardwire to 240 V for more heat. On every model here the flame runs independently of the heater, so the look works with the heat switched off.
